A Crowded Home Care Market ? Finding the right agency for you or your loved one
A Crowded Home Care Market –
Finding the right agency for you or your loved one
With all the competition and changes going on in the home care market, seniors and their loved ones have a difficult task of finding the right company to provide assistance at home. Many franchise home care companies in Louisville are opening their doors each month. Yet often, we hear that the local franchise has been in business for ten years. The franchise may have been in business that long but not serving our local community. It can be very misleading. Since ElderCare 4 Families doors have been open since 1981 in Louisville, Kentucky and Southern Indiana, we can take pride in knowing the area, the industry and have the word of mouth to separate us from our competitors.
What else should a family look for besides experience and reputation? We encourage our clients to look at all aspects and not just price to make a decision. Any company can choose to be the low cost leader in a market, however their pricing decision also affects how much they can pay their caregivers, if they are paying taxes and worker's compensation and whether they are performing yearly background checks and training. Here are a few other things to consider when hiring a home care agency:
It is also important to understand what happens when a caregiver can't show – is the agency guaranteeing a similar caregiver (same skill, personality...) for back-up?
Is the company transparent with hourly charges, company policies and other caregiver procedures? Can you get those in writing?
What is their hiring process?
What background checks are run? How often are background checks – criminal, driving, drug testing..run? What criteria do they use to disqualify a worker from being hired or retained?
Can you tell me about the training the new and established caregivers receive?
Are there professionals that monitor the caregivers in the field? How often and how is it done?
Can you see a worker's compensation or liability policy for the company?
Does the company employ team members or an answering service to answer calls after hours and on weekends or holidays? Have you tried calling after hours – do they answer?
Does the company meet with and interview you and your loved one to determine their needs, wants, wishes and routines in person?
How does the company handle consistency and continuity in caregivers? How are caregivers matched? What if I don't like them?
Can you talk to a person currently getting care from the company? Do they offer recommendation letters?
What is their company rating with the Better Business Bureau? Are there any complaints with the licensing or certification office in your state? Are they members in any other organizations?
Do your homework when hiring a home care agency. There are a handful of agencies giving great care and dozens of agencies simply looking to make a dollar. Choose a company that is honored to touch the lives of many and make a difference each and every day. If ElderCare 4 Families can ever assist you or your loved one, don't hesitate to call. Let us show you how each and every family is special to us and everything we do shows we care.
