Finding Purpose In Life

Finding Purpose in Life

Key to Happiness

My husband's 96 year old grandmother has held a few job titles in her life - wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, employee, friend, daughter or even neighbor to mention a few. We all know aging seniors that have held numerous important roles with purpose in the lives. Making a difference, doing something of value and having a purpose are important to people of all ages including seniors. Some seniors have the perception that their life doesn't have a lot of purpose and they struggle daily since their children are grown and their careers are retired.

Happiness and purpose may be being surrounded by sunshine, family, memories and experiences that matter for some. Others need more and need a reason to get up every day. They need to find something to live for. If you or your loved ones are someone that needs to find purpose in life, ask yourself a few questions. What makes you smile -people, activities, events, hobbies, or charitable causes? What are your favorite hobbies now and in the past? What makes you feel great about yourself? Who inspires you? What things are you naturally good at? If you had to teach something, what would you teach? What are your deepest values? What message would you love to communicate to a large group of people? Since you have many talents, passions and values, how can you use those resources to serve, help or contribute?

So what if you want to serve, help or contribute and arthritis, memory or other challenges, get in the way? Many seniors can contribute and find purpose in both small and large ways despite obstacles. Here are a few suggestions around finding purpose alone, with family or even with a ElderCare 4 Families' caregiver:

  • Make a tie baby blanket for a Women and Children's Shelter.

  • Read a children's book to a library mom's day out group

  • Cook dog biscuits and donate to the humane society

  • Research your genealogy and give to your children or family as a gift

  • Volunteer at one of numerous charities

    • Delivering meals for home bound seniors with Meals on Wheels.

    • Helping in a theater – sell tickets, greeting individuals and you can also see the play for free

    • Visit the sick in hospitals or nursing homes

    • Assist a church

    • Contact Score if you previously ran a business to help new business with your expertise

  • Take a class at a local community college

  • Make cards for friends, neighbors, or those in need

  • Record your history with a recorder

  • Create a cookbook for others to enjoy your favorite recipes

  • Grow an organic garden or containers

  • Take up a new hobby – writing a novel, cycling, walking in the wheelchair

There are numerous ideas to find purpose in life regardless of your age or abilities. You may have always made promises to yourself and today is just be the day to start holding yourself to those promises. Find your passion and your purpose today!
