Technology For Seniors

Technology is teaching seniors that you are never too old to learn

More and more apps and technology products are being introduced each and every day and seniors are embracing these as they bring value to their lives. Over half of adults over 65 are using the internet and email. 34% of this same group use facebook or at least one social networking site. Adult children are also finding technology to be an effective way to help them support an aging parent’s desire for independence.

Here are seven technological advances that are worth considering for seniors:

  1. Tablet devices. I pads make it easy for seniors to video chat with family, play games, send emails and explore websites. Touch screens are extremely easy to use for those with arthritis or poor vision since font size can be increased. All of this connectivity can take place right from the comfort of their favorite recliner.
  2. Gaming technology. Wii has revamped senior fitness and gaming in senior communities and in homes with tennis, bowling, golf and guitar hero. Brain games, other physical fitness or socialization options are also available with these technologies. in Wii challenge matches in tennis, bowling, golf and even Guitar Hero. These types of technologies are great for physical fitness, brain health and for promoting socialization.
  3. Video chat. A face-to-face chat is nice when family is miles away. Often these services are free or low in cost. These visual conversations also can alert families to problems before it is too late by noticing weight loss or a disheveled appearance.
  4. Home safety devices. From medication dispensers, personal emergency response fall detectors or alerting a loved one that the stove is on, these are just a few ways technology is making life easier and safer for seniors and their families. Whatever your loved one needs, there is likely to be a tech solution.
  5. Remote monitoring technology. Most of these systems work off of sensors that are strategically placed throughout the home. These systems monitor the senior throughout the day and night. It can alert caregivers if something out of the ordinary happens. If an exterior door is opened during the middle of the night, for example, an adult child can be notified. Or if the senior hasn’t gotten up at their usual time in the morning an alert can be sent.
  6. GPS tracking devices.  If a loved one is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease but wants to continue living alone, GPS technology can help. These devices are typically about the size of a large wrist watch. If a loved one wanders away and can’t be found, the GPS on the device can be activated, allowing them to be quickly located. Many also have an alert the senior citizen can trigger if they become lost and frightened and want help finding their way home.
  7. Health tracking technology.  Tracking health conditions and medications can be easy to do using a smart phone app or an online program. From medical appointment calendars, sign-up sheets for transportation or meals or logging important information on-line for medical emergencies, these apps allow family members to be able to share the load or have information at their finger tips. Some individuals even love tracking their mileage for their daily walks and this can be done also with technology.

Embrace technology today for better health.

Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing. Recliner Wheelchair
